I love history & this battle was fought on ground just minutes from our home on March 15, 1781 during the American Revolutionary War! The Guildford Courthouse Battle is a pretty big deal to our little town of Greensboro, NC so as they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do right?! We joined right in and commemorated the Battle's anniversary at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park this past weekend where they reanacted the whole thing!
We heard loud guns and cannons firing. Saw troops rallying together and against one another. Horses galloping past with the riders decked out in true uniform hoisting up their nation's flag. The battle was quite a sight! It was neat to see people so passionate about history and carrying on the legacy of those who fought for our liberty.
The real battle only lasted 90 minutes in duration, and although the British technically defeated the American force, they were greatly weakened and lost over a quarter of their own men. US Major General Nathanael Greene was able to aid in the unraveling of British control and shortly after, Britans's troops headed by Cornwallis, were driven to Yorktown, VA and defeated. So even though the Guilford Courthouse Battle was lost, Greene is deemed a hero. He even gets a 'bourough' named after him. Gee I wonder which one that is? Greensboro, NC of course!
We also got to walk through old colonial time homes in Tannenbaum Park. Reanactors explained what it would have been like in the day to live off the land and take care of their families. I am most impressed with the resourcefulness & ingenuity of their time but also grateful for the modern conveniences we have today.
Camden was interested in all the loud booming noises of the battle and just the best little trooper in the hot sun, making new friends where ever we ventured. He loves being out & about, especially when he is getting a free ride on Dad's back!
We finished off the day with a late lunch at Five Guys Burgers and Fries. We figured a good old burger was as American as you could get. It was our first time at 5 Guys! I would have to give it 5 out of 5 stars. Very scrumptious!
Camden even enjoyed eating his first french fries! Love my all American boy!
