If You Keep On Believing

Wow, where to begin. I have wrestled so many times in how exactly to share my journey and story of my postpartum Emery self. For so long I would sit down to write and things would just not come out because it would just seem so sad and dark and depressing and not to mention my mind was just swirling around with so much and with the fog of confusion over me, it was hard to even compile anything that sounded very coherent. So I stopped writing and blogging. I stopped all creative outlets...trying to dabble in some here and there when I could, but often I felt numb and incapable. I lost so much confidence in myself and part of me died a little and went into hiding. I went into survival mode. It hurt and I never thought I would be the same person and in one sense I was right, I am not the same person but now I would say I am stronger for it & an even wiser version of my best self.

See wiser woman example pic below. Duck face selfie and all ;) Making me feel very vulnerable because selfies are scary, just ask Brene Brown. Anyways...

Now I can claim to be a fighter, a warrior of postpartum anxiety/depression, a truth and light seeker, who pushed through so much sludge to be here today. Now, that's not to say I had a terrible life but physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally it was the hardest time in my life and I've never had to rely so much on God to pull me through.

The least I could do was hold on to faith and the promises I knew to be true. To put the gospel I had learned all my life into practice and experiment on the word. Even if it was just holding onto ONE thread of hope that day, I kept holding on and fought so hard to push to the light that I knew was right around the corner if I just kept hanging in there.

At times, I felt because I was trying so hard to do good worthwhile things, like fighting to be the best mom for my kids and best wife and support for my husband, the adversary was trying to break me into believing it wasn't worth it for me to fight for those things BUT because those things were SO hard to do, it made me think that I actually was doing something right because why then would Satan push so hard? Why then would he send in his storms and whirlwinds to rain against me if I was fighting for the harder right than the easier wrong? If I was following him he would simply back down and not at all impede my upward journey. Satan delights in nothing but tragedies for families while God wants nothing for our families but to be happy, have joy and love! God, in the midst of this storm was there the whole time watching over me even when it felt that my prayers were only hitting the ceiling, He was there with outstretched arms continually beckoning me to grow and step closer to the light.

Now that I'm on this side of the tunnel and more fully in the light again like I never imagined would happen but knew was possible...I've gained so much. I lost so much too and mourned for the happiness I could have felt and should have felt postpartum with a sweet adorable baby but now I see so much more and my bond with Emery is stronger than ever before because of how hard I have had to push through that wall. I've become better at (and still very much working on daily) replacing my negative, limiting, self doubting thoughts that so consumed me, with truth and light because, frankly, I was just so dang tired and exhausted by living in this deep low place of a muddled state of mind that I never imagine I'd be in.

I knew how to get happiness I just had to put it into action and start acting like I owned it already, because in truth I really already did and it was all right there in front of me, I just had to pull myself higher and live a different way. Changing my habits and daily rituals, aligning my behaviors with what I truly valued. I would say my very nature has changed because of all this self reflection and coming unto the Savior who helps make the most of our true self in no other way that we could do on our own. It has been my price to truly know God.

I also relied on the strength of so many sweet friends who stepped into my life at the very moment I needed them. To hear their stories and feel their strength, I knew those friendships were placed in my life by no coincidence. God's hand was in that and He continues to do that for me as I come across living angels, meeting new friends and expanding my tribe, finding support in those seeking for truth.

Through this time, as I have mentioned before on here, I also sought professional counseling & took medication for a time to pull me out of the thick of it. I used natural remedies and exercise and music and mindfulness, pretty much any help I could get...but I can boldly declare that through Christ ALONE I am healed because really HE makes ALL these things possible.

Mental health is no joke. I still struggle every day with anxiety and some depression at times but through my journey and better awareness of what is happening in the hard moments, it turns me to Christ and I view my anxiety as a strength because without it, would I depend more on myself? Would I still have gained this amazing new perspective? Would I have grown as much as I have? Or come in contact with the people I have? Would my marriage have grown as much? Would my ability to love & parent have grown as much?

I am now more sensitive to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit than ever before. When my chest or throat feels heavy with worry I stop and ask, what is my body telling me? Why are alarms going off? What am I missing? What do I need to tune into? What do you want me to know dear Lord?

I have felt by embracing my brokenness, I no longer come to Christ's feet occasionally but stay at His feet continuously.

Sometimes it's a prayer I am reminded I need to say on someone's behalf. Other times it's a lesson I need to learn or share from a certain experience, or gospel parallel that sticks out from a Disney movie ;) Other times it's a call to rest more that day and to just relax and breathe, go watch a show on the couch with your kids and snuggle them to soak in their sweetness.

My anxiety has helped slow me down to notice the small beautiful things around me and to carpe diem, seize the day! Because if I push myself and run more than I have strength I completely falter and miss the whole point of life! The small things really are the big things.

I have come to realize and accept the fact that I. am. an. anxious. person. So no matter if I'm hiding and withdrawing from the world or out proclaiming things loudly and boldly I'm going to feel the fear and anxiety regardless...so I'm going to keep feeling the fear and doing it all anyways, shooting for my goals and dreaming big!

When I'm doing hard things like pushing out of my comfort zone it feels new and uncomfortable but we are not here on earth to feel comfortable. We are here to change (not unlike the Beast from Disney's Beauty and the Beast who needed to learn how not to be deceived by appearances but to love unconditionally) and be moldable, to learn and grow from all that God leads us to and through!

So, "If you keep on believing the things that you wish will come true!!!" (You know, from Disney's Cinderella, A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes song) That's called FAITH my friends and it's a good place to start on the journey to health and healing!

If you have made it to the bottom of this post & find yourself identifying with some of these same inner struggles, please know you are NOT alone. Some of the very best people around are on this hard upward path & there really is hope and happiness right around the corner.

I once felt that fairy tales were lies and full of false realities and hope, just fluff and not at all what I was experiencing but as I sang that Cinderella song over and over again, "If you keep on believing the things that you wish will come true!!!" while rocking baby Emery to sleep in the wee hours of the morn, often bawling my eyes out while squeezing the words out, I would miraculously feel the spirit flood the room and surround me with warmth and the promise that everything would work out, it will all be okay. We just have to keep on believing & "keep trying, keep trusting, keep growing. REMEMBERing that Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow and forever!" (Quoting Jeffery R. Holland)

I know now that in reality we can have our happily ever after as we put our trust in God and follow the path He has for us, no matter what that path entails! Because of Him we can declare, "Come what may and love it!"

Impressions On the Heart // Our True Missions

A heavenly beam of revelation funneled down into my heart and mind to write this the other night and I couldn't ignore it...

Sometimes we forget how hard Satan is working against us. He wants to prevent us from having any kind of joy! The kind of joy that we feel when we look into the eyes & faces of those we love....that pure, unselfish, charitable, loving, undeniable, your heart-is-going-to-burst-open kind of joy that feels like a pure beam of light from our Heavenly Father! You know the one?

Satan wants us to be distracted (glued to our phones and ipads), bored (wishing we were always somewhere else or that time would fast forward), selfish, lazy, and careless instead of focused (on what is most important), mindful (of the present, the smiles on children's faces, the beauty of the earth...the everyday simple, yet joyous of joys), engaged (in good causes), thankful (for all we have been given) and quick to remember God!

Satan's main goal is to tear our families apart by dimming our view on life, by weakening our ability to see what this life is really about so that we turn our backs on each other and forget why we are here.

He wants us to think less of our true worth and potential and the potential of those around us. He wants us to doubt and listen to his never ending lies and continue down with him in his spiral of despair.

So, my goal is to show him! Show him whose side I am fighting for by working hard and dedicating myself to the purposes God has sent me here for!

There is no time to waste. Our time is a gift from God and we must use it well! We must look life in the face and smile smile smile...not put on a fake smile but a smile that comes from the joy in our blessings and the realization of who we are and what our purpose is! A smile that pushes us forward throughout our whole day.

Remembering why I am here gives me the motivation to be better and strive for more than I feel I can do. Any time i feel like i cant do any more, i really can do more because I know that with God's help anything is possible. Anything can be done if our intentions and hearts are pure, if we strive for righteousness and to be close to the spirit and follow through with His promptings. Anything can be done if we simply ask God for the strength to do His purposes.

As sure as I know my Savior lives I know there is one that seeks to distort and destroy all that has been built on the rock of Christ. We must not let ourselves loose sight of our true missions!

Also, some of my favorite quotes from this most recent LDS general conference with hashtags & all....

Satan's fate is already determined...he knows he is going to loose. Stay on the lords side and you will win every time! #elderscott #ldsconf #april2013

Righteous living = personal peace #eldercook

What Matters more is how our children are raised, not where. When moving ask what ward needs a good family?

Repentance, humility, respect, cooperation build great/happy marriages.

Following Christ is a continuous commitment.... #oaks

I have come to know that faith is a real power, not just an expression of belief. There are few things more powerful than the faithful prayers of a righteous mother! #boydkpacker

Life Lately

Oh hey there, long time no blog!

I have had lots of choice moments the last few months and I truly feel myself stretching and growing in ways I didn't think possible. OH how our little Camden keeps me busy! I guess it is time for a bit of an update...

Being a Mom is definitely the hardest most challenging thing I have ever done in my life....but oh so worth all the sweet hugs from those tiny arms around your neck and kisses from those sweet little lips. There is a place in my heart that has been filled that I didn't know was empty. My love and joy overflows daily for being blessed to raise such a sweet and valiant spirit. I know that our Heavenly Father loves us so deeply because of how much I love Camden. Heavenly Father's plan of happiness for us is so perfect.

Our trip to DC really made me ponder how extremely blessed we are to live in the country that we do, to have the loving family that we do and of course the ultimate knowledge of the gospel and God's plan for us. Out of all the knowledge in the world we are equipped with the most vital and important knowledge of what we need to do to get back to our Heavenly Father.

We are so so blessed and have little to be down about. I've been thinking lately how what I think are my worst days are most likely someone's version of the very best day. I need to be more aware of that and live with gratefulness every day for the wonderful blessings that are mine.

I heard a quote the other day that says, "Abundance is not what we acquire, it is what we tune in to." So good huh?! & another one was...."Gratefulness turns what we have into enough!" Love it! They have become my new personal mantras.

We heard a story at the Holocaust museum about this Jewish woman who was finally liberated from the death camp she was imprisoned in and a English solider asked if he could get her anything. She asked for warm socks and a bag of sugar. He brought them to her and the socks were falling off her bean pole legs (she only weighed 70 lbs) and she downed the whole bag of sugar all at once. Out of all the horrific and awe inspiring stories I heard I started crying after this one because of how she had been so stripped of her humanity and not even allowed warm socks and sugar....not even allowed these simple mundane everyday pleasures that we don't even think twice about!

It gives me a lot of strength thinking about the survivors of the Holocuast....how they made it through such hard times that were so unjustly thrown at them. They endured and came out stronger for it. My trials are nothing like there's but I have hope that I can endure mine because of all that they triumphed through. If they can survive what they went through surely I can survive my trials.

President Eisenhower visited some of the Holocaust remains after the war and said, "The things I saw beggar description...The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were...overpowering...I made the visit deliberately in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda.'"

It was amazing all the emotions we felt in visiting the Holocaust museum. We felt anger, disgust, compassion, helplessness, and resolve. I am still haunted by it but it is good to remember the past so that we learn from it!

I've really been learning to lean more of the Lord even more now that Scott has been traveling more. He has spent time in China and Honduras....traveling for a week long period out of every month. It is such a comfort that we are never alone & that we have full access to the infinite atonement! If we just really take the time to pay attention and stay intune with the spirit we can feel of the Lord's literal presence at all times.

Short story...When Camden was a few months old we were driving somewhere in our car....Scott was in the front seat, I was in the passenger's seat and Camden was in the back in his rear facing infant car seat. Scott got out of the car to get gas. Camden started to cry! The car was stopped and he couldn't see us. He thought he was all alone....but I was right there. I was always there. I was just behind him! It occured to me that that is how God feels about us sometimes! He is ALWAYS there for us we just have to tune in!

{I am also so so thankful for the countless friends we have made while living in North Carolina who have lightened my load and shown me what true friends do. I couldn't have gotten through some of these weeks without them!}

Camden is turning into such a big boy with a big personality. He is almost 17 months now and is the smartest little thing and such a crack up. Scott and I were saying the other night how, as busy as he is we miss him after we put him to sleep....It makes it all the more exciting for a new day to spend with our little sunshine! More Camden stories and updates to come...

Scott hasn't had to travel much in Oct or Nov so far. It is so nice to have him home during this beautiful time of year! :) So looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas time to spend time with family and have a few weeks off to celebrate!

Welcome spring!

had an english teacher in high school who always admonished us to take time out of our busy teenage lives to literally "stop and smell the roses." Such an important lesson that I have been reminded of as of late & oh how I love the spring to do just that...especially here in North Carolina! The song lyrics "I looked out the window and what did I see, popcorn popping!" never rang more true ; )

I love how the cherry blossoms are blooming all over town! I just stand under the trees looking up in complete awe of the abundantly fragrant & fluffy white and pink flowers! They are so beautiful! I can't imagine anyone denying there is a God. To me these flowers are a true witness and testimony of God's existence and great love for us!

"For all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator." {Alma 30:44}

I'm also super excited our hydrangea bush is beginning to burst with bright green leafy blooms! I can't wait to see it in full bloom, plenty with gorgeous hydrangea flowers. I wonder what color they will be?

Here is one left over from last spring. Looks like they will be white?! Hydrangeas are some of my favorite flowers other than peonies & orchids! I even wanted them for our wedding but they weren't in season! No one else in our lil town home community has a hydrangea bush in front of their home so I feel pretty lucky!

Growing up my mom was always pointing out beautiful sunsets, trees and flowers to us wherever we went. I remember the first time my mom pointed out a bird of paradise flower (the one that looks like a crane) in the parking lot of an Olive Garden when I was like 5 or 6. I thought it was a real bird haha! I hope that my children will grow up noticing the small & simple, beautiful creations all around them.

Camden already loves getting outside and rolling around in the grass! You could say it is one of his favorite past times : )

Oh and so is eating the grass! As soon as I pull the grass from his hands or mouth he grabs another handfull. "It is just so tasty mom!"

Welcome spring, we are so glad you are here!

Have Hope

I just want to blow this quote up in a mega huge ginormous size
and plaster it all over my walls...

"Fear not, be of good cheer
The future is as bright as your faith."

I have always loved this quote and I have really been able to apply it to just about every facet of my life...especially during the times when I have been a little less patient than I should have been or felt disappointed over the curveballs life has thrown at me...Or when I have felt helpless and distraught over the conditions of this morally decaying world and what it means for my future family. I even remember reciting this quote over & over in my head during hard times in college when I didn't think I could go on any more. It always gave me that extra boost of...I can do this!

Family motto? I think YES!

We all really do have such bright futures ahead of us if we just keep on keeping on and focus on the eternal goal and perspective in life! There is no need to fear!

It is such a great reminder that...

& that if we just keep our heads up and
have faith in His eternal plan and
center our lives on our Savior, Jesus Christ...
!

The future really is as bright as our faith!

38 Weeks

So here I am in all my 38 week prego glory!

Feeling pretty ready now. (Way more so than the last 3 times I have said that. Haha!) Just feeling more and more tired, huge and uncomfortable :) My dreams are all about labor & delivery these days and I've been eating lots of peanut butter, watermelon, oranges and popsicles to get me through these warm summery days!

I've been having lots of regular BH Contractions and am 1 1/2 cm dilated and 50% effaced...which means he could come tonight or next week. Who knows! Now it is just one big waiting game. I have no clue when this little guy is going to get here but it could be any time now!

Doc says baby shouldn't be getting any bigger than 7 lbs
....so he is just the perfect little size.

Had my last baby shower and spent some fun time with family this past weekend. We had a blast & ate lots of good food....My fam always knows how to party and tucker the prego girl out. Can't believe my brother is all graduated and an Eagle Scout! So excited for all his new upcoming adventures.

This week I washed and folded all of baby Camden's newborn clothes.
So fun! They are so tiny!

Now that we are just weeks (days?) away from this baby's arrival and actually in the month of JUNE it is feeling pretty surreal that he will be here this soon. I think this is the first time I have actually felt a little nervous...Just nervous of the unknown really, I have never done this before!!!!

We found out I am Strep B Positive which makes me a bit more nervous because I lost a sibling to Strep B...but I will be able to get the needed antibiotics during labor and if need be, baby can get some extra once he arrives so that everything will be A okay! Just another thing to worry about but we are going to do all that we can to insure baby Camden's arrival is a safe and healthy one!

Scott & I are both so excited for this new adventure in our lives and feel so blessed to have been shown so much love and support by our family and friends. We have so much to be thankful for.

We were driving around the other day in another part of town and saw some apartments we were thinking about living in when we first got here to Cali. We were saying how different our experiences and friends would have been if we would have moved there instead of where we are now.

Makes you realize how each decision you make should be made with prayer & by following the Lord's path we are always blessed. We are blessed in ways that we don't always see at first but down the road as we put some of the points together we see what the Lord truly had in mind for us & we are so glad that we followed His plan because He knows all!

From this little epiphany one day at a stoplight in front of some apartment building I learned that we just have to continue to trust in the Lord in all that we do and remember that everything that happens to us in this life is for a reason....good or bad. I am so grateful for the power of prayer in my life and especially for the knowledge I have of my Savior and that He has provided the WAY for me and my family!

I saw this quote recently and LOVE it as it is so applicable to the next step in our lives...

"We hold in our arms the rising generation. They come to this earth with important responsibilities and great spiritual capacities. We cannot be casual in how we prepare them. Our challenge as parents and teachers is not to create a spiritual core in their souls but rather to fan the flame of their spiritual core already aglow with the fire of their premortal faith......"

Elder Neil L. Andersen

Stay tuned for baby Camden's arrival! 14 more days and counting! :)
